Berneray Community Council : Comhairle Coimhearsnachd

Shieling view

After a period of time without a Community Council, the residents of Berneray formed a new Community Council which met for the first time in the autumn of 2004.

Berneray Community Council deals with issues that concern and affect the island and its residents, for example:

  • planning applications.
  • developments that affect the island.
  • utilities and service providers to the island.
  • local transport issues and infrastructure, such as buses, roads, harbour developments and ferry crossings.
  • any issues that are brought to its attention by residents of Berneray.

The group operates under a constitution and is a funded body, with discretionary control over how it spends its monies. It has 6 members plus a clerk, all of whom are residents of Berneray.

Members meet on a monthly basis, usually in the Community Hall. All residents of Berneray are welcome to attend meetings. Meetings of the Community Council have, to date, consisted of a pleasing mix of new and older residents; debate is informal and open to all.

The Community Council is the first point of contact with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, and the councillor gives a report at every meeting. It also liaises with other local community councils such as North Uist.

Progress to date

To date, the Community Council has progressed forward a number of initiatives, including:

  • Wire mesh on breakwater repaired
  • Pol-an-Oir clear-up
